The Discovery of Hawaii

It is believed that this uninhabited, remote island was discovered and first visited sometime before 450 AD by voyagers from the Marquesas islands in the South Pacific. They traversed thousands of miles of uncharted open ocean in double hull canoes that were constructed without the use of metal. The south point of the island of Hawaii is one of the earliest place of habitation. The people who came to live here were without written language. They preserved their history with chants and legends, and much of the early history is gone, dying with the Kahunas (priests) and story tellers who held the knowledge.
