NORTH KONA
When Mt. Hualalai erupted in 1801 it covered fishponds and villages for miles along the shoreline of North Kona.
"When efforts by the priests to appease the volcano goddess failed to stop the flow, Kamehameha traveled by canoe to Mahaiula, where the flow was entering the sea. At the edge of the flow he cut off some of his hair, wrapped it in a ti leaf and cast it into the lava, thus making a gift to Pele of a part of himself, This was the highest gift he could make; as a female spirit, Pele could not receive human sacrifice. The flow stopped and Mt. Hualalai has not erupted since..." but it is still considered active.
